A Brief History of Tonka Trucks

The name Tonka is attributed to coming from an abbreviation of the nearby Lake Minnetonka, and it is also attributed to one of the local Minnesota Native American tribes.

The first Tonka Truck (Steam Shovel #100) was produced in 1947, by Mound Metalcraft. It wasn't until 1956 that Tonka Toys, Inc. was formed.

The early Tonka Trucks had a basic design, though they would later become more complicated as time went by. In addition, the use of aluminum was switched to steel, as they toys became more popular.
